A young man was on his bicycle when a vehicle struck him and kept going. The driver left him there and went home.
We worked that case the way you work every case that matters — methodically, completely, without shortcuts. Dozens of neighbors canvassed. Countless hours in that community. Every lead followed until it either opened into something or closed. We knew what kind of vehicle we were looking for. We knew the front end would be damaged. We knew someone out there had seen something, or knew something, or was something.
The tip came in and pointed us to a name and an address.
I went to her door in plain clothes. No uniform, no marked unit. I was polite. Casual. I identified myself and asked her one question — whether she owned a vehicle matching the description we were looking for.
She said yes. And then she walked me to the garage.
When that door went up I already knew. The impact on the front windshield told the story before she said a word. Embedded in that glass was hair. Physical evidence of a life that had ended on a dark road while the driver went home and tried to forget what she had done.
She broke down. Started crying. Said she thought she had hit an animal.
"The phone put her there. The windshield put her there. Her own words put her there."
We later tracked her cell phone through tower data — from her place of work, down the road, past the exact location where the young man was struck. The phone put her there. The windshield put her there. Her own words put her there.
She was charged and sentenced to prison.
The arrest doesn't bring him back. I know that. But his family deserved to know what happened to their son, and they deserved to know that someone was held accountable for it. That's what closure looks like in this work — not satisfaction, not victory. Just the truth, documented and delivered.
That is what I do now in private practice. The cases are different. The clients are different. But the approach has never changed — patient, methodical, present. You canvass the neighborhood. You follow every lead. You knock on the door politely and ask the right question.
And sometimes, the answer walks you straight into the garage.
